Just off the coast of Fremantle in Western Australia sits a beautiful, Mediterranean-esque island that you perhaps would have no idea existed unless you knew about it. This is Rottnest Island, where stunning white sandy beaches merge with warm turquoise water.

Getting to Rottnest Island

If you’re visiting Perth – Western Australia’s capital city – Rottnest Island makes for a great day trip, or you could decide to stay a few days as accommodation is available on the island. Ferries leave from Fremantle, Hillarys Boat Harbour and from the Barrack Street Jetty right in the heart of Perth, where you can cruise down the Swan River and then out into the Indian Ocean for about another 25 minutes. The ferries run throughout the day, so you can head off in the morning and then spend the whole day there, catching a ferry back to the mainland in the afternoon.

The ferry arrives in the settlement of Thompsons Bay, where you instantly step out onto a lovely stretch of beach, and shops, restaurants, cafes and accommodation are all on offer. I recommend stopping at the famous Rottnest Hotel for a beer, situated right on the beach.

Getting around Rottnest Island

There are no cars on the island, apart from official vehicles, however there is a road that runs all around the entire island. To get around you can walk to nearby beaches and coves from the settlement or catch the bus which circles the island, stopping at main points of interest, however the absolute best way to get around the island is by bicycle.

You can bring your own bike over on the ferry or rent one on the island. By cycling you are free to go where ever you like on the island and discover hidden coves and beaches. You might even find one all to yourself! I found that the further away I went, the less people there were.

History

Rottnest has an interesting history and it was an important strategic location during World War II. There are several remnants that you can check out, and you can even stay in the old army barracks.

Quokkas!

Another unique thing about Rottnest Island, and I think my favourite thing, are the Quokkas. These cute little creatures are marsupials, similar to a kangaroo, but look a little like a rat. This is actually how Rottnest got its name, as early Dutch explorers who stumbled upon the island mistook them for giant rats. Rottnest means “rats nest” in Dutch. You will see Quokkas all over the island sleeping under trees and bushes and often coming out to say hello. As is usually the case, people have fed them over the years and as such they have grown very trusting towards humans and will come right up to you. If they do, don’t feed them as it is bad for them and some nasty people have harmed them in the past. Just say hello and move on. They certainly are very photogenic.

Amazing beaches

Cycling around the island is one of the best parts about Rottnest. You will discover some stunning coastal scenery and beautiful white sand beaches. There are some great snorkeling and surf spots as well. The only bad part is trying to decide which beaches to stop at!
