Like most people I speak to back home in Queensland, London is one of my favourite holiday destinations. Here are some things to do in London when you visit.

The London Eye

Standing at 135m high, the London Eye gives you remarkable 360 views across London. It is situated on the South Bank of the river Thames, only a short walk from the Waterloo Train Station, making it a perfect place to start your day of exploring if you are staying outside of the CBD. I recommend getting up early and beating the crowd by going on their very first rotation. Pre-book your tickets for the London Eye in advance to save you time and money. Each capsule is air-conditioned and takes about 40 minutes to do the full rotation. Once you are up the top you are treated with picturesque views across London.

Tower of London

Located on the North bank of the river Thames, the Tower of London, previously called Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is an historic castle in central London. Rich in English history, I recommend spending a good portion of your day here exploring the grounds and taking the time to walk along the walls.

The most popular building is of course where the Crown Jewels of England are on display. The line up to get in is big, but they only allow a certain number of people in at a time. Everything inside is one way to keep the flow of foot traffic going at a steady pace. I will never see so many jewels in the one place again. The sheer size and weight of some of the Crown Jewels are phenomenal!london-tower-of-london-white-tower

See a show

London is well known for their award winning theatre productions, so naturally a trip would not be complete without a show to end the day. Unlike NYC’s Broadway district the theatres are widely spread out through the city. While I was there during my last visit I took my sister to see Wicked after a lovely Italian meal and it was spectacular! The performers were extremely talented and each performer succeeded in being true to their characters. Next time I go to London I will be going to see The Lion King, which is another popular production.

I strongly recommend booking your tickets in advance for any big production, as they sell out months in advance.

The British Museum

If you love your history then you will need to spend a good portion of the day at the British Museum. We were not actually planning on going here and stumbled upon it during a walk. Due to the time of day we did not get to see very much, but it is well worth a visit. I know we will be visiting again next time we go to London.

St Paul’s Cathedral

Sitting atop Ludgate Hill at the highest point of the city of London, St Paul’s Cathedral is a beautiful piece of architecture worth visiting. Unlike most cathedrals, St Paul’s will cost you money to go in. However, there is a lot to see and explore inside the cathedral to make it worth your while.

The Cathedral consists of 4 floors, the cathedral floor, the dome (inside and outside), the golden gallery and the crypt. Down in the Crypt you can visit many historic figures from England’s past, such as Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.

River Cruise on the Thames

If you are after a more relaxing approach to getting around, why not take a river cruise on the River Thames? Not only is it a great way to get from A to B, but it is a good way to wind down after a busy day or stay out of traffic. There are various cruises and ferry options when you go to the pier.
